They have focused on protecting the labors dignity within the workplace. It is an important factor for the development of the company. The report of 2014 has outlined the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility through which the company focuses on well being of the society. Thus, Fuji Xerox maintains the social rules and regulations to make the company more acceptable to the local market. The report of 2014 has given importance to Corporate Social Responsibility that stresses on the well-being of the community or the society. Therefore, the company tried to meet the requirements of the society. Fuji Xerox abides by social rules and regulations to make it more acceptable to the society. The company has given importance to the product management service in its report of 2014. This service increases the product quality. The company has highlighted the importance of improved team spirit to improve the service quality for the overall development of the organization. The report of 2015 includes small segments for easy access to the shareholders and the stakeholders. The expenditure on production services was 13.2%, in global services, it was 15.7%, and in office printers, it was 16.1%. All these expenditures have helped the company to develop the quality of the equipments. Thus, they have tried to maintain the quality of the products and services.(Fujixerox.com. 2016) The report of 2015 has given importance to the dignity and self-esteem of the workers within the organization. In a way, it helps the company to develop trust and loyalty among the workers. The workers are encouraged to perform better than the previous. The report published on 2015 has emphasized on human right policies to protect the rights of the workers, consumers and other external stakeholders. The report of 2015 revealed that the company has introduced Corporate Social Responsibility within its operations to encourage the workers for work in a more creative manner. It has emphasized on including global communities within the business framework of the company. The productivity of the company in the present location is given importance in the report of 2015 published in Japan. They have introduced some development policies for an improved product and service qualy. Factors causing the difference in sustainability reports The sustainability reports of the company Fuji Xerox has been discussed and analyzed in detail. The reports were published in 2014 and 2015. After the analysis, some differences are found between the two reports. The primary reason behind the difference is that the reports are based on the two different companies. Australia and Japan have different cultural background. Larcker and Tayan (2015) discussed, Fuji Xerox has to comply with the ethical and social norms of the country in which they operate. It is also found that they have followed the guidelines of GRI G4. According to Armstrong (2015, the presentation of the reports is designed in such a way to satisfy the needs of the people residing in a particular country. The company has given importance in understanding the historical and cultural background of the people so that the stakeholders cooperate in the business operations. Keeping in mind these different factors, Fuji Xerox prepared their sustainability reports in 2014 and 2 015 respectively. Now, discussion of this report will be based on Hofstedes six-dimensional model to recognize and understand the factors causing difference to the sustainability report. Hofstedes six dimensions of social values Power Distance: The Power Distance in Hofstedes model focused on the equal distribution of power. It determines how much people believe in the equal distribution of power. It is found that Australian people believes in the hierarchical approach that relates distribution of power with the individuals ability and skill. Australia has gathered a score of 36 in this dimension. It is very low. In Japan, people believe in hierarchical approach. They do not believe in equal distribution of power. Fuji Xerox had to comply with this difference. Individualism vs. Collectivism: This dimension considers the individual aspects of the people. Australia has a score of 90 in the dimension that proves people are very much concerned about their families and themselves. Japan has acquired the score of 46 in the dimension. It indicates that Japan believes in collectivism apart from focusing on individual necessities. Keeping these scores in mind, Fuji Xerox has included various social activities at the time of publishing the report in Japan. The report of Australia contained financial benefit related issues for the stakeholders. It is given more importance than the overall benefit of the society. Uncertainty avoidance: This dimension demonstrates the situation that creates uncertainty among people. They feel threatened by this uncertainty. The score of Australia is 51, which defines that Australia takes an intermediate position during such situations. The score of Japan is 92 and it proves that the country have adopted range of safety measures to avoid unknown threats. Therefore, Fuji Xerox has taken necessary social measures in the sustainability report. Environmental measures adopted by the company in the reports belong to this category. However, the report of Australia also included these measures. Masculinity vs. femininity: It considers to what extent people strives to be the best. The score of Australia is 61 and the score of Japan is 95. The scores define that Japan focuses more on this difference than Australia. Keeping this in mind, Fuji Xerox has adopted a shared vision in its sustainability report. It has helped them to gain competitive advantage from the local market of Japan. In case of Australia, they have focused on the individual benefits of the stakeholders. Long-term orientation vs. short-term orientation: This dimension defines how much people in a specific country consider long-term development. The score of Australia is 21 and the score of Japan is 88. It proves that Japan thinks more on long-term development than Australia. Therefore, to satisfy the needs of different people, Fuji Xerox has given short-term objectives for Australia and long-term objectives for Japan. The company has provided shared values for Japan. Indulgence vs. restraint: This dimension of Hofstedes model considers how much people can control their desires and impulses. The score of Australia is 71 and the score of Japan is 42. It indicates that Australian people believe in expressing desires and impulses and the Japanese people feel that controlling the emotions and impulses is against the social norms. Therefore, the company has emphasized on the value added benefits of the products in the sustainability report of Japan. In case of Australia, the company has provided essential information about the financial benefit of the stakeholders. Part C: Conclusion and Recommendations Conclusion: After assessing the sustainability reports, it can be said that Wesfarmers and Fuji Xerox have followed the guidelines propounded by GRI G4. After evaluating the sustainability report of 2014, it can be said that the company has tried to make the report accessible for the benefit of the stakeholders and the shareholders. Incorporation of graphs and charts in the report of 2015 has made it more accessible to the investors and shareholders. It is a fact that publishing the sustainability report helps the company to remove transparency and knowledge gap and establish a healthy environment. It also helps developing public relations, which holds immense importance in the growth of the company. Improved public relation helps in the overall improvement. It is an advantage in the global competitive market. Both the companies have understood this fact very well and therefore, clearly stated important and essential data in the reports. Recommendations: Although the companies have kept almost every factor in mind, still the reports could have been better. Therefore, some important recommendations will now be discussed in the following: Improved Accessibility: To improve the sustainability report, Wesfarmers should focus on better accessibility of the reports to those for whom it is made. The company should include numeric data to forecast profitability of the company. Incorporating social activities: The sustainability report provided by Fuji Xerox does not contain details about their social responsibilities. Inclusion of it could have made the report more attractive to all the investors and the shareholders. Their environmental compliances are also not detailed. However, it was necessary. Outline sustainability indicators: It is found that inclusion of sustainability indicators is very important. The stakeholders and the shareholders should have the knowledge about the key sustainability factors that are helping the company to improve their situation. The company should clearly highlight the areas they are focusing on. The two reports by the two different companies have discussed the sustainability measures they have taken. However, it is not clearly stated to what extent they have gone to maintain the sustainability and what their main areas are. Development of better communication: For the development of a better communication with the shareholders and the stakeholders, the company should focus more on removing certain knowledge gap. They could come up with a new sustainability website through which they will spread sustainability awareness. The website should include all the information about the steps and procedures that they have undertaken as a means of sustainability practice. They can also share some videos that display their work. It builds an environment of mutual trust and understanding. Continue to support energy management and conservative initiative: the companies should focus more on including energy management and conservative initiative. They should explain in detail to what extent they are focused on improving their efficiency in these two areas. At present, energy management and energy conservation have become important issues. Therefore, the companies can attract the shareholders and the stakeholders by explaining through the reports how much they are considering these two issues. Many shareholders and stakeholders might become more interested to know more about the company if they concentrate on the energy conservation and management of resources that produce energy. Make a public commitment: Although both the companies have provided information about their commitments towards environmental sustainability, and both of them have outlined the policies that they have taken, yet they should have come up with more commitments. It is away to show their concerns about the sustainability of the environment. Part D: Reflective Journal of personal development Completion of the assignment helps me to understand concept of corporate governance and ethical obligations of preparing sustainability report. In this assignment, I have completed two different parts such as sustainability report of Wesfarmers and Fuji Xerox. In case of Wesfarmers, I have compared two sustainability reports of 2014 and 2015. Here, I have learnt to identify the key factors, which enhance quality of a sustainability report. Apart from that, it has helped me to identify the key aspects that need improvement for improving the overall report. Moreover, I have compared sustainability report based on cultural requirement of people. In case of Fuji Xerox, the company has published the 2014 sustainability report in Australia and 2015 sustainability report in Japan. Here, I have identified the factors that influence the company differentiates both sustainability reports. Apart from that, I have learnt the principles of good corporate disclosure for both Australia and Japan. T his assignment helps me to understand that in order to comply with the environmental policies an organization needs to comply with the G4 GRI guidelines while disclosure. This assignment helps me to evaluate the extent in which an organization is complying with the guidelines while disclosing sustainability report. The most important factor that I have understood after completing this assignment is how an organization can conduct sustainable business with good corporate governance practices. The importance of shared value while publishing report has been emphasized through this assignment. Nowadays, companies are publishing good corporate governance practices in order to attract stakeholders towards the brand. Bipolar Disorder The phenomenon of bipolar affective disorder has been a mystery since the 16th century. History has shown that this affliction can appear in almost anyone. Even the great painter Vincent Van Gogh is believed to have had bipolar disorder. It is clear that in our society many people live with bipolar disorder; however, despite the abundance of people suffering from the it, we are still waiting for definite explanations for the causes and cure. The one fact of which we are painfully aware is that bipolar disorder severely undermines its` victims ability to obtain and maintain social and occupational success. Because bipolar disorder has such debilitating symptoms, it is imperative that we remain vigilant in the quest for explanations of its causes and treatment. Affective disorders are characterized by a smorgasbord of symptoms that can be broken into manic and depressive episodes. The depressive episodes are characterized by intense feelings of sadness and despair that can become feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. Some of the symptoms of a depressive episode include anhedonia, disturbances in sleep and appetite, psycomoter retardation, loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, difficulty thinking, indecision, and recurrent thoughts of death and suicide (Hollandsworth, Jr. 1990 ). The manic episodes are characterized by elevated or irritable mood, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, poor judgment and insight, and often reckless or irresponsible behavior (Hollandsworth, Jr. 1990 ). Bipolar affective disorder affects approximately one percent of the population (approximately three million people) in the United States. It is presented by both males and females. Bipolar disorder involves episodes of mania and depression. These episodes may alternate with profound depressions characterized by a pervasive sadness, almost inability to move, hopelessness, and disturbances in appetite, sleep, in concentrations and driving. Bipolar disorder is diagnosed if an episode of mania occurs whether depression has been diagnosed or not (Goodwin, Guze, 1989, p 11). Most commonly, individuals with manic episodes experience a period of depression. Symptoms include elated, expansive, or irritable mood, hyperactivity, pressure of speech, flight of ideas, inflated self esteem, decreased need for sleep, distractibility, and excessive involvement in reckless activities (Hollandsworth, Jr. 1990 ). Rarest symptoms were periods of loss of all interest and retardation or agitation (Weisman, 1991). As the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association (MDMDA) has demonstrated, bipolar disorder can create substantial developmental delays, marital and family disruptions, occupational setbacks, and financial disasters. This devastating disease causes disruptions of families, loss of jobs and millions of dollars in cost to society. Many times bipolar patients report that the depressions are longer and increase in frequency as the individual ages. Many times bipolar states and psychotic states are misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. Speech patterns help distinguish between the two disorders (Lish, 1994). The onset of Bipolar disorder usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 30 years of age, with a second peak in the mid-forties for women. A typical bipolar patient may experience eight to ten episodes in their lifetime. However, those who have rapid cycling may experience more episodes of mania and depression that succeed each other without a period of remission (DSM III-R). The three stages of mania begin with hypomania, in which patients report that they are energetic, extroverted and assertive (Hirschfeld, 1995). The hypomania state has led observers to feel that bipolar patients are "addicted" to their mania. Hypomania progresses into mania and the transition is marked by loss of judgment (Hirschfeld, 1995). Often, euphoric grandiose characteristics are displayed, and paranoid or irritable characteristics begin to manifest. The third stage of mania is evident when the patient experiences delusions with often paranoid themes. Speech is generally rapid and hyperactive behavior manifests sometimes associated with violence (Hirschfeld, 1995). When both manic and depressive symptoms occur at the same time it is called a mixed episode. Those afflicted are a special risk because there is a combination of hopelessness, agitation, and anxiety that makes them feel like they "could jump out of their skin"(Hirschfeld, 1995). Up to 50% of all patients with mania have a mixture of depressed moods. Patients report feeling dysphoric, depressed, and unhappy; yet, they exhibit the energy associated with mania. Rapid cycling mania is another presentation of bipolar disorder. Mania may be present with four or more distinct episodes within a 12 month period. There is now evidence to suggest that sometimes rapid cycling may be a transient manifestation of the bipolar disorder.
